Much of Vestavia Hills climbs the slopes of Shades Mountain along U.S. 31, with neighborhoods reaching down toward Cahaba Heights and out to Liberty Park. Homes here often sit well above or below the street, which means retaining walls holding up yards and driveways, and rainwater running downhill toward foundations and neighboring lots.
Many of the older homes on the mountain are also due for updates. When a kitchen remodel or addition is on the table, we look at the ground around the house too, because an addition on a slope needs solid excavation, footings and drainage before the framing goes up.
